"Unchurched Christians"

(A letter emailed early in 2005 to our local Christian radio station

in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada

in response to a discussion on this topic:)

"Monday morning, about 7:30, I was listening to FM 94.3. George Barna's recent poll, which indicated that 13 million born again believers in the United States had not been "in church" in the last 6 months, was being discussed. The commentators were bemoaning the fact that so many Christians (not only in America but around the world) were "unchurched" because they did not "attend church services".

I would like to suggest another perspective on this situation..... I, myself, am a born again Christian, a former ordained minister and church planter who no longer attends church services, who no longer contributes tithes to support clerical church staff nor offerings to help maintain church buildings! But I certainly would NOT describe myself as "unchurched"! Actually, "unchurched" and "Christian" are two contradictory terms! If you are a Christian you are a member in the only church in which God recognizes membership! Many unsaved people have their names on membership rolls of religious congregations, and "attend services" faithfully, but they are not part of Christ's church just as wolves are not part of a shepherd's flock!

I would like to suggest that if George Barna had lived in the first century and asked his questions of the early Christians he would have concluded that 100% of first century Christians were "unchurched"! NONE of them "went to church"! (They WERE the church where ever they went!) None of them "attended services" in church buildings! (Rather, they simply gathered in each others homes for prayer, teaching, breaking of bread, exhorting one another, encouraging one another, weeping with those who wept and rejoicing with those who rejoiced!) "Church buildings" did not come into common use until the third century when Constantine made Christianity a "state religion" and promoted many practices among Christians which were common in the idolatrous religions around them!

Nor did any first century believers pay tithes to support a small class of leaders called clergy! Rather church leaders in the first century taught the believers that they were ALL clergy! The apostle Peter ,in I Peter 2:10, calls the saints the LAOS (laity) or "people of God." In the same epistle chapter 5 and verse 3, Peter commands church leaders (elders) not to Lord it over God's KLEROS (clergy) or "heritage"! So the apostles were well aware of a fact that today's "clergymen" (among whom I once was numbered!) seem to ignore! Just as every new covenant believer is a priest (I Peter 2:4,5), every believer is also one of the KLEROS, CLERGY (I Peter 5:3) and every believer is gifted for MINISTRY and responsible to minister to others as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (I Peter 4:10,11) In like manner, every child of God is ORDAINED by God to bear fruit that remains. (John 15:16)

Some of the many reasons why so many Christians are dropping out of "religious congregations" are the following:

-Too many "churches" and "clergymen" muzzle the people of God when they "attend church"! But scripture clearly teaches that the agenda for God's people when they assemble together is to be "one anothering", (i.e. provoking or stirring up one another to love and good works and exhorting or encouraging one another) NOT sitting as passive spectators staring at the backs of their neighbors' heads!

-Too many "churches" give no opportunity for the exercise of the gifts of each believer which they have received from God!

-Too many churches require the payment of tithes and offerings for the support of an unscriptural clergy class of ministers and for the maintenance of an unscriptural "house of God" made of bricks and mortar and stained glass windows! But God no longer dwells in temples made with hands!

But many believers who are excited about their relationship with the Father, with Christ, with the Holy Spirit and with their brothers and sisters are finding that the best way to experience church, as God designed and intended it, is to gather together in each others' homes! Millions of believers all over the world and more and more North American Christians are doing just that! A rapidly growing number of so called "unchurched Christians" are becoming actively involved in churches in homes! I would personally encourage ALL believers to become involved in such scriptural gatherings!

A brother in Christ,

Bruce Woodford, Norwich"

(The commentator on the same talk show the next morning acknowledged receipt of the above letter. While he did not read it, he did acknowledge that, yes, many Christians who have "dropped out of church" or "stopped attending church services" are indeed involved actively in house churches!)

Also, you can read or download an online book, "So You Don't Want To Go To Church Anymore - an unexpected journey into the reality of the Father's family"  at www.jakecolsen.com   The author writes this about it: "If you, like me, have read the New Testament and thought there must be more to this Christian life than you have experienced in the religious structures of our day, you are not alone. I've struggled with that same concern for most of my journey.

Not anymore!

In the last few years I've come to discover the fulfillment of my wildest dreams about what it means to live as a child of God in the earth and how to share that life with other believers in ways that are authentic, free and joyful. This is my story. I hope it informs and inspires yours."

SHEPHERDS AND SHEEP

(an appeal to pastors and people to release each other

to function in liberty as God intends.)

My great grandfather was a pastor, my grandfather was a pastor, I was a pastor, and I have many good friends who are pastors. I am deeply burdened that pastors and people within the body of Christ are under tremendous bondage so that neither "shepherds" nor "sheep" can function as God intended! The church (as we know it) is the only body or association of people which requires so much of its' leaders and so little of its' members! I have discussed this matter with many believers including many pastors/elders. Most are aware that SOMETHING is wrong with a system which expects a few to "burn out" while the majority "rust out"! But most do not know WHAT is wrong. Just as a doctor can only restore a sick patients' health by:(1) DIAGNOSING THE CAUSE OF THE PATIENTS' AILMENT AND (2)PRESCRIBING A REMEDY, so too the GREAT PHYSICIAN has (1) DIAGNOSED THE CHURCH'S AILMENTS and (2) HAS PRESCRIBED THE REMEDIES IN HIS WORD. But just as a patient will only recover as they receive and apply the doctor's prescribed remedy, so too, if churches are to recover and be restored to divine power and vitality, we must receive and apply God's remedies prescribed in His Word!

As a young "Reverend" serving in my first pastorate as a first term missionary I began studying scripture to learn scriptural principles of first century church leadership. I was convinced that the MODEL AND MANDATE for every valid church practice and doctrine would be found in the words of scripture. In other words, whatever God expects His church to DO AND TEACH will be found in two forms in scripture: it will be found: (1) by way of EXAMPLE and (2) by way of EXPLANATION.

But I was astounded to discover that many practices,  which I had assumed were scriptural,  found neither MODEL NOR MANDATE, EXAMPLE NOR EXPLANATION in the Word of God! These were not practices over which there were denominational differences. Every theological camp was in full agreement with them! I could find no scriptural model or mandate FOR any of these practices, yet scripture clearly gives both model and mandate AGAINST EACH AND EVERY ONE!

Please consider with me the following questions:

(1)Does the first column of the following chart represent a scriptural diagnosis of ailments which bind shepherds and sheep and prevent both from functioning as God intended?

(2)Does the second column represent scriptural remedies which we as believers must apply if we are to enjoy divine liberty as new covenant believers?

NO BIBLICAL MODEL OR MANDATE:                   CLEAR MODEL AND MANDATE FOR THE OPPOSITE:

1.Giving "Reverend"titles to men.                    Model:"Reverend" a title for God alone.Ps.111:9

Mandate:Elders account to the OWNER NOT to the SHEEP.Heb.13:17

6.One man ministry.                                        Model:Plural ministry marks all church meetings:Ac 2,11,13:1-3; 15

7.A man presides over meetings.                         Model:No man presided over any church meeting:Acts 2,11,13:1-3; 15

Mandate:"Presiding" violates the clear commands of I Cor.14:23-35

8.Pastors must be public speakers.                     Model:Elders are servants/examples to sheep.ICor.16:15,16;I Pet.5:3

Mandate:Public speaking NOT required of an elder.ITm.3:1-7;Tit.1:6-9

9.Sermons the central focus.                              Model:All N.T. preaching involves active audience participation!

                                                                      Paul's preaching Ac.20:7 was a dialogue (DIALEGOMAI).All homilies

                                                                      (HOMILEO)are conversations! Lk.24:15; Ac.20:11; 24:6

                                                                     Mandate:The Lord's command,"Freely ye have received, freely give." Matt.10:8

11.Baptism clergy administered.                           Model: Every baptism in scripture contradicts this tradition!

Mandate:Matt.28:19 Believers to make disciples and baptize them!

12.Communion clergy administered.                       Model:Communion is never distinct from common meals! For saints, the

                                                                        common is made holy! Acts 2:46; 20:7; 27:21-36; ICor.11:20-34

Mandate: Scripture says nothing about "clergy" "administering".

He reprove thee and thou be found a liar." Pr.30:5,6; Ps.12:6;  ICor.2:13

14.Collections for staff/buildings.                              Model:Saints collected for the needy.Acts 4:32-35;II Cor.8 & 9

Mandate:N.T. collections were for POOR SAINTS. I Cor.16:1,2

15.Clergy and laity distinct.                                     Model:All N.T. saints are priestsIPet.2:5,9; ministers IPet.4:10,11;

God's clergy I Pet.5:3; ordained by God Jn.15:16 and servants of

                                                                        God Rom.6:22; Eph.6:6; I Pet.2:16

                                                                        Mandate:Elders forbidden to "lord it over God's heritage.I Pet.5:3

"Heritage" is KLEROS (clergy). All believers are commanded to

minister according to their various gifts.I Pet.4:10,11

I have personally served as a pastor or elder in 2 different denominations. (A denomination is A GROUP WHICH DISTINGUISHES ITSELF FROM OTHERS IN THE BODY OF CHRIST BY A NAME NOT GIVEN THEM BY GOD AND EXCLUDES FROM ITS' FELLOWSHIP THOSE WHOM SCRIPTURE DOES NOT. Scripture DENOMINATES the people of God as: "believers", "brethren and sisters", "Christians","disciples", "saints", "sons of God" etc. All of these terms unite true believers in Christ. But denominational designations introduce unscriptural division and distinction between brothers and sisters in the body of Christ!)

In the past, my own ministry was characterized by all 15 practices above which have no Biblical model or mandate. Applying the scriptural remedies has required RADICAL ADJUSTMENTS in my own ministry, practices and relationships. I can testify from experience that every such adjustment has brought greater liberty, blessing and opportunity for ministry in the body of Christ!

My appeal to all believers (shepherds and sheep) is this: ARE YOU (personally) WILLING TO MAKE WHATEVER CHANGES THE WORD OF GOD REQUIRES OF YOU SO THAT BELIEVERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY (not members in your denomination!) MAY FUNCTION IN THE LIBERTY WHICH GOD DESIGNED FOR HIS PEOPLE IN EVERY PLACE?

The following chart demonstrates how our accepted traditions in Christendom have warped our whole concept of how shepherds are to be related to sheep! Pastors are treated like BAKERS! And sheep are treated like customers!

Believers, your treatment of God-appointed overseers marks YOU as A SHEEP or as A CUSTOMER! Overseers, your treatment of believers in your care marks YOU as A SHEPHERD or as A BAKER!

WARNING!!! Bakers tend to be very critical of the baking of others, and bakers and customers tend to be very critical of each other! But ALL sheep and shepherds have a common enemy: A ROARING LION!

So I would plead with all believers: Shepherds, don't be critical of the sheep in your care! (in God's flock, all under-shepherds are also sheep!); and sheep, don't fall into the trap of a critical spirit towards your shepherds (God may very well be fitting you, yourself, to function as a shepherd!) Rather let all "be sober, be vigilant, for your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour." RESIST HIM BY APPLYING AND OBEYING THE WORD OF GOD! I Peter 5:8,9

NOTICE THE FOLLOWING CONTRASTS BETWEEN: -BAKERS & SHEPHERDS and

-CUSTOMERS & SHEEP:

1.WHERE AND HOW ARE THEY TRAINED?

-BAKERS are usually trained in schools of baking where they learn the recipes and techniques of that school's master bakers.

-SHEPHERDS are trained in the midst of the flock where they learn by following the CHIEF SHEPHERD and by caring for His sheep. John 21:15-17; Acts 20:28-37; I Peter 5:1-4

2.WHO CHOOSES WHOM?

-CUSTOMERS CHOOSE THEIR OWN BAKERS.

If they don't like "the goods" they find another baker!

-THE OWNER OF THE SHEEP APPOINTS SHEPHERDS FOR HIS OWN SHEEP.

Sheep NEVER hire or fire their own shepherds! John 21:15-17; Acts 20:28; I Peter 5:2,3

3.WHO IS BOSS?

-THE CUSTOMER IS THE BOSS.

The baker must please the customer!

-THE OWNER OF THE SHEEP IS "BOSS".

Shepherds must give account to HIM. Hebrews 13:17

4.WHERE DO THEY WORK?

-BAKERS WORK IN THE HEAT OF THE BAKESHOP and "take heat" from irate customers.

-SHEPHERDS WORK IN THE PASTURE and AMONG THE SHEEP.

They lead sheep to green pasture and still waters and they smell like sheep! Psalm 23:1,2; John 21:15,17

5.WHO CALLS WHOM?

-CUSTOMERS CALL BAKERS.

-They call with orders and they call with complaints.

-SHEPHERDS CALL SHEEP.

-They lead them out to green pastures and in to the fold. John 10:3

6.WHAT IS THEIR GREATEST THREAT?

-A BAKER'S GREATEST THREAT IS OTHER BAKERS, AND BAKERIES IN THE SAME COMMUNITY. Competition puts little bakers out of business.

-A SHEPHERD'S GREATEST THREAT IS PREDATORS.

Lions, bears and wolves prey on lambs, sheep and shepherds. I Samuel 17:34-36; Psalm 23:5; Acts 20:29-31; I Peter 5:8,9

7.WHAT IS THEIR WORK?

-BAKERS BAKE FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT OR WILL NOT FEED THEMSELVES.

Bakers are experts at making bread, buns, cakes & cookies according to the customers' favourite recipes.

-SHEPHERDS LEAD SHEEP TO PASTURE AND PROTECT SHEEP FROM PREDATORS.

Shepherds NEVER PREPARE FOOD,(they cannot produce grass or milk!)But they do lead sheep to well known pastures. The word translated "feed" in John 21:15&17 means "to pasture". The word translated "feed" in John 21:16; Acts 20:28 & I Peter 5:2 means "to shepherd" or"to tend sheep".

8.ON WHAT DIET DO THEY THRIVE?

-CUSTOMERS THRIVE ON BREAD, BUNS, CAKES & COOKIES.

Have no appetite to feed in the pasture!

-SHEEP THRIVE ON THE MILK AND PASTURE OF THE WORD OF GOD.

Will become weak and sickly on baked goods! Ps.23; Jer.15:16; IPeter 1:23-2:2; Acts 20:32

9.WHY DO THEY WORK?

-BAKERS BAKE FOR:

A career, a business, their livelihood, or to make a name for themselves.

-SHEPHERDS TEND SHEEP FOR:

Love, satisfaction, joy and to be willing examples to sheep. Gen.29:15-20; Is.53:10-12;

Heb. 12:1,2; I Peter 5:2,3

10.WHAT IS THEIR REWARD?

-BAKERS trade bread, buns, cakes and cookies for MONEY.

-SHEPHERDS TEND SHEEP for love of a bride, for more sheep, and for a crown! Genesis 29:20; 30:28-34; I Samuel 17:21-27: II Samuel 5:1-3; John 10;16; Ephesians 5:25; Hebrews 2:9; I Peter 5:1,4

11.HOW MANY WORK TOGETHER?

-BAKERS WORK BEST ALONE:

Assistants and sales clerks are hired but the baking of bread, buns, cakes and cookies is usually done by ONE PROFESSIONAL BAKER.

-SHEPHERDS WORK BEST AS A GROUP:

Caring for ONE FLOCK is done best by A NUMBER OF SHEPHERDS who know the sheep because they themselves have grown up as sheep in the same flock. Luke 2:8; Acts 20:17,28; I Corinthians 16:15,16; I Peter 5:1

12.WHAT CERTIFICATES AND TITLES ARE GIVEN THEM?

-BAKING SCHOOL GRADUATES receive a certificate, a title and wear clothes which distinguish them as professional bakers.

-SHEPHERDS are trained among sheep, not scholars; they don't graduate, they graze sheep; they don't bear titles or wear uniforms, they bear sheep. Job 32:21,22; Psalm 111:9; Luke 15:5,6

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

FOR PASTORAL SEARCH COMMITTEES

To our friends in churches which are searching for a pastor: As you consider the selection of another pastor, could I suggest a little different perspective by way of the following 6 questions?

1.Which of the following is the best illustration of Christians in a church?

(a) citizens in a country

(b) shareholders in a corporation

(c) sheep in a flock

2.Which of the following are the best models for church leadership?

(a) dictators                              (e) chief executive officers

(b) kings                                    (f) managers

(c) presidents                             (h) foremen

(d) prime ministers                       (i) shepherds

3.When a flock of sheep needs shepherds, who is responsible  to select them?

(a) the lambs                             (d) the butchers

(b) the sheep                             (e) the wolves

(c) the shearers                          (f) the owner of the sheep

4.Would a wise sheep owner, who loves his sheep and has paid dearly to purchase them, ever leave a little flock of his sheep without shepherds to lead, guide, and protect them?

(a) YES -if a shepherd resigns, dies or moves and the owner can't find a replacement.

-if sheep won't follow their shepherds the owner gives up on them.

-most of the time the sheep have to appoint a "shepherd search committee" because the owner just plain failed to appoint another shepherd for them.

(b) NO -a wise, loving sheep owner NEVER leaves any of his flocks without shepherd care,

-but many shepherds, he has appointed, expect to hire someone to do the work the owner has given to them!

-Therefore sheep DO NOT SEE SHEPHERDS SHEPHERDING THE FLOCK. Thus they conclude (wrongly) that the owner has not appointed any. SO SHEEP ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY TO LOCATE AND APPOINT THEIR OWN SHEPHERDS!

5.Who knows best what qualifications are absolutely essential in shepherds, and what responsibilities they are to carry?

(a) the lambs                   (c) other shepherds

(b) the sheep                  (d) the owner of the sheep

6.Based on your answers above, how would you determine the qualifications and responsibilities which are required of shepherds of a flock of sheep in your community?

(a) survey the lambs to see what they want of a shepherd.

(b) survey the sheep to see what they want of a shepherd.

(c) survey other flocks to see what they expect of their shepherds.

(d) survey other shepherds to see what they expect of their peers.

(e) search "The Owner's Manual" to see what the owner of the sheep requires of his shepherds.

(If you chose a,b,c or d, remember, "Opinions are like noses -everybody has one!) If you chose e, then check out "The Owner's Manual." You may be surprised!

SOME SURPRISING FACTS YOU MAY DISCOVER IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL:

1.The Pastoral Search Committee DOES NOT ANY LONGER HAVE TO CARRY THE RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND A PASTOR!

2.The congregation DOES NOT NEED ANY MORE NAMES TO BE RECOMMENDED BY THE DENOMINATIONAL HEADQUARTERS!

3.The flock could be DELIVERED FROM THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PAYING A SALARY to one pastor and yet enjoy the ministry of two or more pastors!

4.The flock ALREADY HAS MORE PASTORS than it has ever recognized! Those who get to know scriptural qualifications of shepherds will recognize such very easily!

5.The Owner's Manual clearly identifies THE KIND OF MEN which God appoints as shepherds. THEY HAVE BEEN HERE ALL ALONG!

6.While we may search a long time in order to call one ordained man to minister to this flock, GOD HAS ALREADY CALLED AND ORDAINED EVERY BELIEVER to the ministry!

7.The responsibility of pastors is NOT TO MINISTER TO THE FLOCK! Rather, they are responsible TO EQUIP THE SAINTS FOR MINISTRY, SO THE WHOLE BODY WILL BE BUILT UP!

8.The leadership plan set out in the Owner's Manual is the perfect remedy for "burnout". IT REQUIRES EVERY MEMBER TO CO-OPERATE BY FULFILLING THE FUNCTION FOR WHICH EACH WAS DESIGNED! According to James Dobson (of Focus on the Family) and many others, PASTORAL BURNOUT HAS REACHED EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS IN NORTH AMERICA! Many church board members experience the same! (Try standing on one foot for just 10 minutes. That foot and leg will very quickly appreciate how most church leaders feel!)

9.The Owner's Manual DOES NOT GRANT ANY BELIEVER THE LUXURY OF "GOING TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY"! The spectator sport of "Going to church" is where 90% sit idly by and watch the 10% wear themselves out! CHRISTIANS DON'T "GO TO CHURCH" - WE ARE THE CHURCH! We are not called to be ministered to for an hour or two one day out of the week - WE ARE MEMBERS IN A BODY WHO ARE CALLED TO MINISTER TO EACH OTHER 7 DAYS A WEEK!

What is your unique ministry to others? What is mine? Our ministry is the function for which we have been equipped so the body will be blessed.

WHAT DOES THE OWNER OF THE SHEEP HAVE TO SAY ABOUT

-SHEPHERDS' QUALIFICATIONS?

-SHEPHERDS' RESPONSIBILITIES?

-SHEPHERDS' MOTIVATION AND BENEFIT PACKAGE?

-SHEPHERDS' OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS?

(Note: In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for shepherd is translated as "herdsman", "keeper of sheep", "pastor" and "shepherd".

In the N.T. also, a number of words designate shepherds: "bishops" or "overseers", "elders" or "presbyters", and "pastors" or "shepherds".)

1.SHEPHERDS' QUALIFICATIONS: I Tim.3:1-7 & Titus 1:5-9

A.IN CHARACTER (in their relationships with people) Shepherds must be:

-blameless This does NOT mean they are to be PERFECT! Rather that no one can rightfully accuse them of wrongdoing which has not been confessed and made right!

-vigilant

-of good behaviour

-given to hospitality

-patient

-just

-holy

B.IN CONTROL (restraint of fleshly lusts) Shepherds must be:

-not given to wine

-no strikers

-not greedy of filthy lucre (money)

-not brawlers

-not covetous

-not accused of riot or unruly

-not self-willed

-not soon angry

-temperate

C.IN COMMENDATION (reputation with unsaved ones in the community)

A shepherd must:

-have a good report of them which are without lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

D.IN ABILITY (only three are required) Shepherds must be:

-apt to teach, holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught that he may be

-able by sound doctrine to exhort and

-able to convince the gainsayers (those who contradict sound doctrine.)

GOD DOES NOT REQUIRE SHEPHERDS TO BE PUBLIC SPEAKERS OR PREACHERS! BUT THEY MUST BE MEN WHO SMELL LIKE SHEEP BECAUSE THEY SPEND TIME WITH SHEEP. Just like the Good Shepherd, they feed their flock like a shepherd, they gather the lambs in their arms, and carry them on their shoulders and gently lead those that are with young. Is.40:11

(One of the best books I've ever read about pastors is called, "THEY SMELL LIKE SHEEP".)

E.IN MARITAL STATUS a shepherd must be:

-the husband of one wife. (A single man could not be given to hospitality to women of the flock, nor could an unmarried man be experienced and tested in the ruling of his own children!)

F.IN EXPERIENCE a shepherd must be:

-one that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity for if a man know not how to rule his own house how shall he know how to take care of the house of God?

G.IN MATURITY a shepherd must

-not be a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

H.IN LOCATION shepherds are ALWAYS HOMEGROWN and NEVER IMPORTED!

-as churches were established at Lystra, Iconium and Antioch elders were ordained IN EVERY CHURCH. Acts 14:23

-as churches were established on the island of Crete Paul commanded Titus to ordain elders IN EVERY CITY. Titus 1:5

Thus all New Testament pastors, shepherds, elders, overseers were well known by the flocks which they served. Thus no New Testament church had to search outside of their own community for shepherds.

This is precisely the reason why you will search your Bible in vain to find any evidence of a "pastoral search committee".

The Owner does not seem concerned at all whether shepherds have much education, musical talent, administrative ability etc. In short, God places His emphasis...

- not on WHAT A MAN CAN DO but rather on WHAT KIND OF MAN HE IS,

- not on QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE but on QUALITY OF THE PERSON!

II.SHEPHERDS' RESPONSIBILITIES: (Jer.10:21; 23:1-4; Ezek.34:1-24; Zech.10:2; 11:15-17; Mk.6:34; Acts 20:28-35; Ephesians 4:11-16; Hebrews 13:7,17; I Peter 5:1-4.)

A.PREVENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

-to seek the Lord,

-to visit the flock,

-to "feed" the sheep (The word in scripture for "feeding" sheep has nothing to do with "preparing meals", "bottle feeding" or "spoon feeding"! Shepherds are incapable of producing either grass or milk on which sheep feed! The word "feed" is simply "to tend as a shepherd". Shepherds must KNOW THE PASTURE AND BE ABLE  TO LEAD SHEEP TO IT. They are not intended to be chefs or bakers for those who won't prepare their own food!)

You can tell how mature sheep are BY THEIR EATING HABITS. Little lambs are dependent on the ewes for milk. But mature sheep are able to feed themselves as well as the young that they bear. (What do your Bible study habits say about your own spiritual maturity?)

-to take heed to themselves and to the flock,

-to watch and guard against wolves who enter in among the flock,

-to labour with their own hands to meet their own necessities and to support the weak among the flock,

-to perfect or equip the saints for the ministry so the body will be edified or built up and ALL members go on to maturity in Christ,

-to "rule over" the flock by speaking the Word of God and then modelling it by example so the sheep can follow. "Ruling" of  sheep, in scripture, is NEVER "laying down the law" but rather setting a godly example to be followed,

B.RESTORATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

-to strengthen diseased sheep,

-to heal sick sheep,

-to bind up broken sheep,

-to bring back sheep who were driven away,

-to seek lost sheep,

-to search for sheep who have wandered,

C.STEWARDSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:

-to give account to the Owner for all the sheep entrusted to them.

D.CO-OPERATIVE RESPONSIBILITY: New Testament shepherding is never done by one! It is always a plural and co-operative enterprise!

-at Bethlehem, SHEPHERDS (plural) watched their FLOCK (singular) by night. Luke 2:8

-at Lystra, Iconium and Antioch there were ELDERS in every church Acts 14:23

-at Jerusalem the church was guided by ELDERS Acts 15:4,6,22

-Paul called the ELDERS of the church at Ephesus whom the Holy Spirit had appointed OVERSEERS over the flock.Acts 20:17,28

-addressing the church at Philippi, Paul wrote, "to the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi with the BISHOPS (OVERSEERS) and DEACONS". Phil.1:1

Thus, God never intended that the responsibility for shepherdingany flock of His should ever fall on the shoulders of ONE MAN!

III.SHEPHERDS' MOTIVATION AND BENEFIT PACKAGE:

In scripture, faithful shepherds work for:

A. PRESENT REWARDS:

-more sheep (Gen.30:31,32; John 10:16) and

-the joy of seeing them walk in truth (III John 4)

B. FUTURE REWARDS:

-a bride (Gen.29:17-20) (The church is being prepared as a bride for Christ. Eph.5:25,26)

-a crown (I Pet.5:4) (David served faithfully in the pasture until called to the palace. IISam.7:8)

FAITHFUL SHEPHERDS TAKE THE OVERSIGHT OF SHEEP WILLINGLY, NOT

FOR MONEY. I Pet.5:2 UNFAITHFUL SHEPHERDS FEED THEMSELVES BUT

NOT THE FLOCK. THEY EAT THE FAT, CLOTHE THEMSELVES WITH WOOL,

AND KILL THE SHEEP THAT ARE FED! Ezek.34:1-3

IV.SHEPHERDS' OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS: (Against which they must always

be on guard.)

A.THE WORLD: The physical influence which Egypt had on the Israelites is a picture of the spiritual influence which the world has upon the church:

(a)Israel was enslaved in Egyptian bondage. We were enslaved in worldly bondage. Gal.4:3

(b)Israelites' appetites were defiled by their Egyptian diet. (They despised the manna from heaven, the milk and honey of Canaan but still longed for the fish, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, onions and garlic of Egypt. Num.11:4-6)

How many Christians have little or no appetite for daily prayer, Bible study, and communion with God but are addicted to soaps, sports, fleshly novels, or pornography?)

-The first lesson which Joseph taught his brothers after they moved to Egypt was that EVERY SHEPHERD IS AN ABOMINATION TO THE EGYPTIANS! (Gen.46:34)

So too, every Christian man who devotes himself to serving the people of God as a shepherd will find that he will be despised by the world! "Why waste your life on a bunch of  sheep?!!" So a shepherd must be a man who, with the Apostle Paul,... glories only "in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ by whom the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world."Gal.6:14

B. THE FLESH: Since "the works of the flesh are...these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like" (Gal.5:19-21) this is precisely the reason why God requires the qualifications which He does of shepherds:

-"blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, patient, not a brawler, and must have a good report of them which are without." I Tim.3:2-7

While Samson was a man of great strength, his downfall came because he was a man who never learned to curb and control his own appetites! For this very reason, shepherds must be men who, BEFORE THEY TAKE HEED TO THE FLOCK HAVE FIRST LEARNED TO TAKE HEED TO THEMSELVES! Acts 20:28

C.THE DEVIL: Since the enemy always works by deceit as an "undercover agent" he most often attacks the people of GodFROM WITHIN! That was the reason for Paul's warning to the Ephesian elders: "After my departing shall GRIEVOUS WOLVES ENTER IN AMONG YOU, NOT SPARING THE FLOCK. ALSO OF YOUR OWN SELVES SHALL MEN ARISE, SPEAKING PERVERSE THINGS, TO DRAW AWAY DISCIPLES AFTER THEM." Acts 20:29,30

This is the reason why a shepherd MUST BE A MAN WHO HOLDS FAST THE FAITHFUL WORD AS HE HAS BEEN TAUGHT - THAT HE MAY BE ABLE BY SOUND DOCTRINE BOTH TO EXHORT AND TO CONVINCE THE GAINSAYERS. FOR THERE ARE MANY UNRULY AND VAIN TALKERS AND DECEIVERS...WHOSE MOUTHS MUST BE STOPPED, WHO SUBVERT WHOLE HOUSES, TEACHING THINGS WHICH THEY OUGHT NOT, FOR FILTHY LUCRE'S SAKE...WHEREFORE REBUKE THEM SHARPLY, THAT THEY MAY BE SOUND IN THE FAITH." Titus 1:9-13

WHERE TO FROM HERE?

Your evaluation of the above will determine the course you choose:

(a)If you conclude that this approach to church leadership has no merit, you must continue with the current approach or come up with a better one. How then will you decide what kind of leadership the church, of which you are a part, should seek?

(b)If you conclude that this is the way that God designed New Testament Churches to function BUT YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR SUCH RADICAL ADJUSTMENTS AT THIS TIME... you must continue with the current approach and all its' built in difficulties which continue to plague the search committee and the pastor who may eventually be "called". Do you now have a clearer picture in your mind of the kind of man you seek, than you had before?

(c)If you are convinced that the scriptures provide the only reliable guide for recognizing godly church leadership AND YOU TREMBLE TO THINK OF TURNING IN ANY OTHER DIRECTION...If you have a deep desire for God to SHOW HIMSELF STRONG ON BEHALF OF THIS FLOCK...

If you are willing for such men ALREADY AMONG YOURSELVES to function as God intended shepherds to function...

(Can you recognize 2 or more men AMONG YOURSELVES, well-known by the flock, who meet God's scriptural qualifications for "elders", "pastors", "overseers"?)

If you as believers in this church are willing to be equipped by such shepherds for THE WORK OF MINISTRY WHICH IS TO BE SHARED BY EVERY MEMBER...

The path which lies ahead of you WILL NOT BE WITHOUT ITS' DIFFICULTIES, BUT WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE BLESSING OF GOD:

"Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, TO OBEY IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE, AND TO HEARKEN THAN THE FAT OF RAMS." I Sam.15:22,23

"Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: Where is the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place of my rest? For all those things have mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: BUT TO THIS MAN WILL I LOOK, EVEN TO HIM THAT IS POOR AND OF A CONTRITE SPIRIT, AND TREMBLETH AT MY WORD." Isaiah 66:1,2

"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, TO SHOW HIMSELF STRONG IN THE BEHALF OF THEM WHOSE HEART IS PERFECT TOWARD HIM." II Chronicles 16:9

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him...But be ye DOERS OF THE WORD AND NOT HEARERS ONLY deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. BUT WHOSO LOOKETH INTO THE PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY, AND CONTINUETH THEREIN, HE BEING NOT A FORGETFUL HEARER, BUT A DOER OF THE WORK, THIS MAN SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIS DEED." James 1:5,22-25

THREE KINDS OF BIBLICAL NEW COVENANT CHURCHES:

The essence of the new covenant is RELATIONSHIPS between God and His people and RELATIONSHIPS among the people of God. In a world that is littered with broken relationships, we are called to demonstrate the love of Christ in a loveless world.  God has designed that right relationships be demonstrated to principalities and powers in heavenly places and to a lost world through "churches" - "called out companies" of the redeemed! God has designed three kinds of churches through which to make known His manifold wisdom:

1.Across the entire planet, God is calling out one church, "the church which is Christ's Body".

2.In every city or community, God has one church which includes every child of God in that community. He calls it "the church of God".

3.Scattered across every community are homes of believers which are to be beacon lights of hope to next door neighbors and the folks down the block. Maybe it is God's desire that there be a "church in your house"!!!

Scriptural churches are never defined in scripture by ACTIVITIES (although believers and churches are instructed and commanded to DO many things.) Rather, scriptural churches are defined by RELATIONSHIPS to God and to other believers.

THESE CHURCHES MAY BE CLEARLY DISTINGUISHED BY THE FOLLOWING :

1. THEIR SCRIPTURAL SUMMARY STATEMENTS:I believe that every scriptural doctrine is stated in the very words of scripture and contains the word or expression by which the doctrine is known. It will be one complete sentence and also the most comprehensive statement of that doctrine found in scripture. On this basis, the summary statements in scripture for the doctrines of "the church which is His Body", "the church of God" and "the church in thy house" are as follows: (It is interesting that the largest church , The Body, has the longest summary statement while the smallest church, the church in thy house, has the shortest!)

A. The church which is His (Christ's) Body:

Colossians 1:21-29And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

B. The church of God:

I Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

C. The church in thy house:

Philemon 1:1-3 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer, and to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house: grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. THEIR NUMBER:

A.The church which is Christ's Body is one: Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 10:17; 1 Corinthians 12:12,13, 20; Ephesians 2:16; Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 3:15

B. Churches of God are plural in number:

There is no example of more than one church of God per city:

Ephesus: Acts 20:17,28 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church....Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Corinth: 1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:

Jerusalem:1 Corinthians 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. Galatians 1:13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: (The church which Saul persecuted was the church of God at Jerusalem. Acts 8:1-4)

There are multitudes of churches of God and there may be several churches of God in a province or state:

I Corinthians 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Judaea: I Thessalonians 2:14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

I Thessalonians 1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

C. Churches in houses are also plural in number:

There was a church in Aquila and Priscilla's house:Romans 16:3-5; 1 Corinthians 16:19

There was a church in Nympas' house: Colossians 4:15

There was a church in Philemon's house: Philemon 1:1,2

3.THEIR COMPOSITION:

A.The church which is Christ's Body: is composed of all believers (both Jew and Gentile) since the Holy Spirit was sent down at Pentecost:

I Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

B.The church of God in a particular city: is composed of all the believers in that city:

At Rome: Romans 1:1,7 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, ... To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

At Corinth: I Corinthians 1;1,2 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints,

At Ephesus: Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

At Philippi: Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi,

At Colosse: Colossians 1:1,2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse:

In every place: I Corinthians 1:2 ...with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.

C.The church in one's house: is composed of the saints who gather in that house:

1 Corinthians 16:19 the church that is in their house.

Colossians 4:15 the church which is in his house.

Philemon 1:1,2 the church in thy house:

4. THEIR GATHERING PLACES AND THEIR GATHERING TIMES :

A. The church which is Christ's Body will be gathered together:

-in the air, at the last trump , when saints who have died are raised and living saints are changed and all are caught up when the Lord Jesus comes back through the clouds to the earth. Zech.14:1-5; Matt.24:30,31; I Cor.15:51-58; I Thess.4:13- II Thess.2:3

B. Churches of God in particular cities gather together:

-in any place in the city commodious enough to accomodate them:

-in the temple (Solomon's porch) in Jerusalem Acts 2:46a; 5:11-14

-in a school in Ephesus Acts 19:9

-in a building owned by Gaius. Romans 16:23

C. Churches in houses gather:

-in houses (of course!) There was no "holy day" set aside especially for gatherings! New Covenant believers have no days that are holier than others because they are a holy people called to be holy and to live holy lives all the time! See Romans 14:5,6

5.THEIR PURPOSES FOR GATHERING:

A. The church which is Christ's Body will be gathered together:

-to meet the Lord I Thess.4:13-18

-to rest from our tribulations II Thess.1:7

-so Christ can be glorified in His saints and admired by all the world in all them that believe II Thess.1:10; Rev.1:7

-to appear before the judgment seat of Christ to give account of ourselves to God Rom.14:10-12

-to have our works tried by fire and rewarded by the Lord I Cor.3:12-14

-to be presented as a chaste virgin to Christ, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing Eph.5:27

-for the marriage supper of the Lamb Rev.19:7-9

B. The churches of God in cities gathered together in the first century and should still be gathering together:

-to provide for the needy among them Acts 2:44

-to praise God Acts 2:47

-to deal with matters concerning the whole church:

-caring for the daily needs of widows among the saints and appointing deacons to serve the widows Acts 6

-to hear reports from missionaries who have gone forth serving the Lord Acts 14:27 and 15:4

-to settle doctrinal matters and disputes which divide what God has joined Acts 15:5-33

-to edify the whole church -by ministry to the Lord from His people (tongues, interpretation, psalms, hymns)

-by ministry to the people from the Lord (prophecy, doctrine, revelation etc) Rom.16:23; I Cor.14:23-40

-prayers for all men, for kings and authorities by the men (males) of the church I Tim.2:1-7

C. Churches in believers' houses gather together:

-to wait on the Lord in response to His commands. Acts 1:4 & 1:12-2:1

-to give and receive teaching, (the apostles' doctrine), for daily fellowship and breaking of bread (full meals) in remembrance of the

Lord Jesus Acts 2:46; 20:7-11; I Cor.11:26; Hebrews 3:13

-for mutual and reciprocal fellowship centered around the person of Christ, (see N.T commands for "one anothering" : some are noted below)

- whenever there was a need for concerted prayer Acts 1:13,14; 2:1; 4:

-to instruct other believers Acts 18:26; 20:20

-to show hospitality Acts 16:15 &34

-considering one another to provoke unto love and to good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, and

-exhorting one another, Hebrews 10:24,25

-loving one another, John 13:34,35

-comforting one another, 1 Thessalonians 4:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:11

-every one ministering to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God (gifts received by each one) I Peter 4:10,11

-rejoicing with those who rejoice,-weeping with those who weep, Romans 12:15

-confessing faults one to another, James 5:16

-avoiding partiality James 2:1-5

-to pray, Acts 2:42; 4:24-31; James 5:16

-to be involved in "homilies" concerning Christ. Homilies in scripture are always conversations involving a number of people! A

homily is never a monologue lecture! (See the Greek word "HOMILEO" translated "talked" and "communed" in Luke 24:14,15;

"talked" in Acts 20:11; and "communed" in Acts 24:26.)

-to be involved in preaching. ("Preaching" among the saints is dialoguing NOT monologue sermonizing!) Paul's "preaching" in Acts 20 was the Greek word "dialegomai".

6.THE VOCAL PARTICIPANTS IN THEIR GATHERINGS:

A. When the church which is the Body of Christ is gathered together:

I don't know of any scripture which specificly addresses the matter of vocal participation when the whole Body of Christ is gathered! When the Lord comes and the whole Body is gathered together for the first time, I'm sure He will give us all the instructions we'll need!

B. When the whole church, the church of God in a city is gathered together:

I Cor.14:23-40 regulates such gatherings. Males are required to do the speaking and the women are to be silent (not to speak).

The regulations of gatherings of whole churches of God in cities:

-require men to be the vocal participants and require women to be silent. They are to ask their questions of their husbands at home.

-all speaking (prophesying, teaching, speaking in tongues, interpretation, revelation) is to be done one speaker at a time and when

another has something to say, the first is to be silent. Thus there is no reciprocal, conversational, or two way communication in such gatherings.

-allow any male believer to speak, as long as they do it within the guidelines of scripture:

In order that all in these very large gatherings may be edified:

-there is to be only one speaker at a time

-tongues speakers are to be silent unless there is an interpretter,

-there is to be speaking by no more than 3 prophets and no more than 3 tongues speakers,

-other prophets are to judge/discern that which is spoken by prophets.

C.When saints gather as churches in houses:

There is to be exhortation, edification, provocation to love and to good works, loving, comforting one another and praying for one another. Because "each man" (the generic term "every one") has received a gift from God for the edification of the body and those who speak are to speak as the "oracles of God" and those who minister are to do so as "good stewards of the manifold grace of God", there is opportunity for ministry from every one.

All "one another" commands and instructions:

- include men and women,

-indicate actions which are mutual and reciprocal,

-indicate that all may participate audibly in the particular activity.

In order that all believers in the gathering may be edified, exhorted, comforted, stirred up to love and good works, in order that all who need prayer may be prayed for, in order that there may be weeping with those who weep, and in order that there may be rejoicing with those that rejoice,

There are no restrictions on:

- the number who may be speaking at one time. (Ministry often takes place in a number of small conversations, homilies or dialogues at one time - especially at meal times!

-the number of tongues speakers or prophets who may speak, (While every single person present does not necessarily HAVE TO

participate, church gatherings in homes should be small enough so every one MAY participate if they have something to contribute for the edification of others.)

-the vocal participation of women in teaching, prophesying, speaking in tongues, interpretting tongues, praying or asking of questions. (A gathering in a house is the place where questions, conversation and dialogue all have their place!)

7. OTHER SCRIPTURAL DESIGNATIONS FOR THESE CHURCHES:

A. THE CHURCH WHICH IS CHRIST'S BODY IS ALSO KNOWN AS:

1. The house or habitation of God: Ephesians 2:22; I Tim.3:14,15

2. A holy temple: Ephesians 2:21; I Cor.3:16,17;

3. A building: I Cor.3:9; Ephesians 2:21

4. The household of God, or household of faith: Ephesians 2:19; Galatians 6:10

5. The church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. I Tim.3:15

6. "My (Christ's) church": Matthew 16:18

7. The general assembly and church of the firstborn. Hebrews 12:23

B. THE CHURCH OF GOD IN A CITY IS ALSO KNOWN AS:

1. The whole church: Acts 15:22; Romans 16:23; I Cor.14:23

2. The church which is in/at a particular city Acts 8:1; 13:1; Romans 16:1; I Cor.1:2; II Cor.1:1; I Peter 5:13; Revelation 2:1,8,12,18; 3:1,7,14

3. The multitude of the disciples (in a particular city): Acts 6:2

Gatherings of this church are designated by the following terms:

1."All with one accord in one place" Acts 2:1; and "come together into one place" I Cor.11:20, 14:23

2."Gathered the multitude together" Acts 15:30

C. A CHURCH IN A HOUSE IS ALSO KNOWN AS:

1. The assembling of yourselves together (for provoking one another to love and to good works, and exhorting one another) Heb.10:24,25

2. Your assembly: James 2:2 (in which one could be seated by a footstool, v.3)

New covenant relationships are to be demonstrated with other believers. Because we are members in the Body with every other child of God on earth, we need to endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Eph.4:3)

Because we are part of the church of God in our community in which God has united every child of His, we need to nurture fellowship with other believers around us (regardless of what denominations they may have come from!) As we have opportunities to gather with all beliveres across our communities, we need to be prepared to allow God to rule and regulate such gatherings so that unbelievers who walk in off the streets will worship God, fall down on their faces and confess that, "God is in you of a truth!" I Cor.14:25

But it is in the churches in our homes, scattered across our communities, in which deep and costly relationships are to be forged, nurtured and protected in order that unsaved neighbors around us will KNOW that we are Christ's disciples because we love one another! John 13:34,35
